UI Design Trends 2024: User Experience in the Modern World
The world of UI UX design services is one of the most changing and in fact that part is fundamental for our profession. I still remember those days when responsive design became fashionable, nowadays nobody talks about it and just takes it for granted. Each trend starts to be important to the point of becoming a standard. To keep up to date it is crucial to continue promoting knowledge and learning about current trends.
In 2024, we will learn about many of the UX/UI design trends that will increasingly become the correct way to approach various topics in the digital universe, this will increase visibility and, above all, the participation of different users.
AR and VR technology is becoming more and more immersive
After Apple launched its new Vision Pro in 2024, the topic of a Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality experience is back on the agenda. More and more sites are focusing on enhancing these experiences to offer a unique service or product. They are immersive visual experiences with interactive 3-dimensional environments. AR and VR have been on the market for some time, I would say more than 10 years, but every year they improve their experience and without a doubt at some point when cost and benefit are equal, they will end up being the standard. In 2024, customers can learn about travel sites or products before having them in their homes, this helps commerce and improves experiences.
One such example can be seen in Charlotte Tilbury's virtual makeup test . Another example can be seen this week with everything that Vision Pro users have started to do .
A personalized experience
When I started studying graphic design, we were always given the example of Ford to explain how the world of advertising and design has changed. Back then, Ford sold cars in a single color, regardless of what each user thought. In fact, they had a phrase that said something like: “You can choose any color as long as it’s black.”
We live in a world where personalization of experiences has almost become the industry standard. Users want an individual experience that is tailored to their needs, and we as designers must think about this. Algorithms and artificial intelligence allow us to better understand our market and adapt products to the needs of our customers. That is why we must think about creating a much more intimate and relevant experience.
At this point we will mention the example of the Amazon brand, the products displayed are related to the search history of each user. This is a technique that we can also see in Google Adsense personalized ads .
The interfaces are always clean and minimalist
When we start studying design or advertising, we are told the famous phrase: less is more. Less is more. It is a mundane saying that was popularized by the minimalist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe , and today it is almost a cliché in our market. In a world flooded with information, we have only a few seconds to send a message that is relevant and direct. We are increasingly concerned about negative spaces, better size, and we try to reach as many people as possible.
Something that will never go out of style is a clean and minimalist design, and this is still relevant in 2024. It is easy to find examples of this, just think of the main websites or social networks that we visit, usually their interface is clear and minimalist, for example the Google search page, Amazon, Instagram, X, etc. The same happens with emails, their design focuses on cleanliness like Marialuisa who frames our work when we present it physically to our clients. In 2024, it is ideal to optimize the interface so that our users feel comfortable and effectively reduce all that visual clutter. Among the key principles of a minimalist or reduced design is to keep it simple, use negative spaces, and apply good coherence and visual hierarchy.
Improve your visual experience with dark mode
I remember when apps and websites were just starting to popularize dark mode. Personally, I've always loved this mode because I feel like it refreshes my eyes and gives me a break from bright colors. It's funny how trends move forward; before it was a simple option, but today many companies have decided that this is the standard, it even becomes a kind of personal brand imprint in 2024. Its benefits at the user level are wide-ranging as it reduces eye strain, and each user will have a more avant-garde and elegant experience.
At this point, the best example is undoubtedly the Spotify brand , which uses dark mode as its brand's hallmark.
Microinteractions
One thinks of interactions when imagining a website, application or video game where you see different microinteractions, subtle animations and dynamic transitions, these are elements that not only motivate interaction but also make the experience very pleasant. I imagine myself navigating through those menus where some flashes and even sounds appear. These design details also serve to improve a user's experience when making a purchase. The question is: Who hasn't been tempted to buy an object just for the pleasant experience that those menus sell you? It's a pleasant and memorable user experience.
Motion graphics, animations and microinteractions that give us an impulse to keep clicking are becoming increasingly important.
Using voice in interfaces
Something I never thought would become fashionable is voice reading in different applications. But now that I have parents who are in their 60s, I realize that sometimes they prefer a voice to read their pages to give them a rest. They do this using Microsoft Azure voices or any other type of voice reader.
Here it is also important to mention devices such as smart speakers that allow us to control the entire interface thanks to voice commands. The most classic example would be Amazon's Alexa, which in 2024 will only evolve and allow us to search and command by voice so we don't have to use our hands. Google has also incorporated voice search.
A design that is accessible
More and more designs will use accessibility in 2024. This week on our main site we were able to see the new identity of Arts for Dementia. A website can have an AA or AAA rating depending on its accessibility, these are a series of parameters that have been prioritized to improve the user experience. For example, contrast and a series of fonts that prioritize readability are used. This, regardless of our abilities, helps to make interaction easier.
We should all learn a little more about accessibility in design, and in fact in the next few days I will write a note talking a little about this topic.
Seamless cross-platform experience
This topic is important but it is becoming more and more standardized, since before it was complete chaos, we had to adapt everything to different browsers, operating systems, platforms, screens, scales, etc. Nowadays there is a trend, programmers realized these problems and have evolved by creating standards that allow us to move from one device to another while maintaining a coherent experience.
In a world where users like to switch devices, have multiple screens, etc., who hasn't found themselves ordering food from Uber on the website from a PC and then checking the map on their mobile? Design is becoming more fluid across platforms and allows for consistent experiences. There are still some slightly archaic sites that don't understand this.
On social media we can see how pop-ups have been launched inviting us to make purchases from within the application. We can see this on Instagram or Facebook. Sometimes they even invite us to go directly to the native application.
The most sustainable design
We live in a society that is increasingly concerned about respecting the environment. Especially in GEN Z, people are starting to buy more ecological products that leave a smaller carbon footprint. We could see this in the Instagram trends for 2024 .
In 2024 we want to meet changing expectations. Design is greener, local and sourced sustainably in the long term. This strengthens the bond with our customers by creating more memorable experiences.
Final thoughts:
It is very interesting to see how the UI UX design agency has evolved. Trends in User Interface Design (UI) are becoming more immersive, personalized and accessible, improving their adaptability for a more pleasant experience. Technology will continue to advance and it is we as designers who will have to adapt to the changes. As an old saying goes: “Adapt or die”, we will have to be constantly learning and knowing the trends, otherwise we will run the risk of becoming obsolete, so my advice is to ride the wave of annual trends, and keep going like this until retirement day comes. Maybe it sounds a bit harsh, but let’s be honest, it’s about having fun on this journey of trends in User Interface Design (UI). If you are open to new things you will undoubtedly enjoy yourself constantly, life can be an eternal amusement park for the professional field.
