UI/UX Design for Augmented And Virtual Reality : Course Review
For the Past 5 years my life has solely circled around Design and Design thinking. Studying from the Nation’s Top Design Institute we thought we would be well equipped when we entered the real world with the adequate tools to take on the Design industry by a storm. But who was I kidding? Design Schools can only teach you so much. The rest is all you. Your skills , your proficiency at multiple design softwares and tools and how well you accomodate the college learnings and the real world lessons into it all.
For the Past one year I have been working as a Visual Designer at a Global Artificial Imagery firm. And I have tried my hand at almost all kinds of cool things from machine learning to 3D Product designing using some elements of AI in it. But then, as my virtual designing journey progressed I came across so many creative ideas to make the user journeys way simpler using AR & VR. But I had no one to ask or understand how these could be created or even illustrated in a way that I could demonstrate my ideations.
I researched for months only to find out there wasn’t one Single online course that would teach me the UI UX design services for AR VR without having to know Coding.
Until one day a friend suggested I try this new course Udemy was offering in UI/UX Design for AR VR for Beginners! Initially I was skeptical if this was what could teach me what I was looking for. Since there was no prerequisite of having to know any Coding beforehand.
But trust me when I tell you, this course has equipped me so well to try on AR VR UI/UX design by myself without having to know any prior knowledge about it.
This course has great Theory content , Introduction to tools and in depth practical projects to learn from within the short span of time that this course takes to complete.
Some common topics covered in the course are:
Fundamentals of AR and VR
Imagineering
UX processes for AR (design and prototype, space, motion, text readability)
Tools and devices used (compatibility, AR apps, LiDAR)
30 seconds of storytelling
Presence, agency and affordance
Field of view
Degrees of control
2D and 3D experience
Gaze, gestures and voice control
Making AR prototype using Adobe Aero
User testing and research methods
Takeaway
To sum it up, it is the first ever course that I found that was specifically designed by the UI UX Design agency for Augmented Reality and is also beginner friendly. The instructor has seamlessly taken us through the entire learning curve all while introducing us to very high-end terminologies and features of the design system without making you feel like you have no prior knowledge about the same. The instructor’s motivated pitch and positive nudge to the viewers encourages you to go hands-on and try each thing by yourself. Definitely worth a shot!
